In addition to having partnerships with prominent medical school and research facilities such as Argonne National Laboratory and Fermilab, Illinois Tech boasts many of its own institutes and centers. The four major institutes are IIT Research Institute, the Institute for Food Safety and Health, Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering, and Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research.

Faculty and students engage in research across a range of disciplines through these institutes, research centers, and their related programs.

Founded in 1936 as the research branch of Illinois Tech, IIT Research Institute (IITRI) is a key source of breakthrough research on campus.
